Yesterday was eventful, and it was all good. Today is a day for reflection on it all.
The eclipse: I’m really happy that I went to the trouble of getting to KY and making the drive into the zone of totality. The next north American full solar eclipse is twenty years from now, and it’s definitely not a given that I’ll be around to see it. This was my last best chance, and it worked out. Great day, outsmarted the traffic, and created a great memory.
The end of one and done at UK: I’m so relieved. Calipari’s system rewarded players who only wanted a single year in college. He intentionally created an NBA farm system at UK, and I hated it. Hated the culture, the incentives, and the results. But it’s over now, and I have hope for a better UK hoops future.
Uconn’s back to back championships: Pretty damn impressive. What I’m taking away from the Uconn-Purdue game is that old-school basketball is still the winning formula. Get a dominant big man at center, surround him with athletic guards and forwards, and get plenty of experience on the team (NOT five freshmen). That was the formula for both championship teams, and that should be UK’s formula going forward.
The rest of this week is simply spending some time with the kids, watch a little of The Masters, and prepping the house for Derby guests. Next week, it’s off to the Canary Islands for one of the more impetuous trips ever. We’re going there because a single episode of Jose Andres & Family in Spain highlighted one of the islands and it looked interesting. It’s a pretty big investment, time and money, to visit a place that wasn’t even on my radar a year ago. Fingers crossed.
