It’s been a busy week so far. A little golf, some good time with the grandsons, and two non-trivial home improvement projects involving lots of trips to Home Depot and some manual labor.
On top of all that, I just shut down a micro-business I’ve had since 2023 – renting my KY vehicle to others when I’m away, via a Turo co-host agreement. It was a perfect solution to the problem of not having a garage to store my vehicle in while I’m in Socal – the Turo business picked it up at the airport, cleaned it up and rented it, giving me a cut of each rental. They would then return it to the airport on the day I landed back in Louisville. It all worked great until this year, when the Turo business’s owner stopped communicating with me (or paying me). I finally extracted a catch-up payment from him in April, but another six months has gone by with him ghosting me and no payments. So I let him and his employees know that I’m out and to remove my vehicle from his small fleet. And to pay me.
I’ve prepared a place to park it in my KY backyard, under an overhang attached to our shed. It’s not a great solution, but it’ll keep the Jeep out of the snow and ice this winter. I’ll incur some extra expense getting Uber rides to and from the house and airport each trip, but there’s really no better choice. Longer term I’m considering starting my own little rental fleet or renting a real garage somewhere close, but for now the store-it-myself solution is the simplest. If I ever upgrade to a bigger house here, a garage will be a mandatory feature.
One of the aforementioned home improvement projects was modifying the shed structure to allow the SUV to be parked there. To do that I had to rent a heavy duty sawzall and cut some gates, posts and railings. That was actually fun, though tiring – the sawzall, a reciprocating saw, is heavy and hard to control. And you *must* keep it under control, because it’s just like a chainsaw – one mistake and you can lose a limb. But it’s all ready now, including trimming some bushes to allow the vehicle to fit in between houses via an erstwhile “driveway”. I worry a bit about taking the vehicle through the yard in wet weather, but…we’ll see if that turns out to be an issue. It would have been a problem in June 2026, a very wet month.
The remainder of the week should be fun. Some rain, some golf, a UK exhibition basketball game (!!), and going to Chunkin’ Punkins at Captain’s Quarters on the weekend. Gotta love a trebuchet….
Title picture is of some native grasses in the morning at Nevel Meade. Beautiful, but you don’t want to hit the ball there. The photo doesn’t do the scenery justice.
