I spent the afternoon at the Louisville Zoo with the younger grandson, Jesse. As a result, I have some advice for the zoo management.
- Immediately fire the person who thought putting in a new ticketing system would be a good idea. The lines to get in the zoo were crazy long because every pass holder had to be redirected to the “full service” line to get a new zoo card. Took 30 minutes just to get past the gate. Somehow when they decided to change their system they forgot to ask if it would inconvenience the paying guests.
- Please move either the polar bear enclosure or the sea lion enclosure. Having seals and sea lions (the bears’ natural food supply) right next to the bear is just cruel. No wonder the polar bear paced back and forth incessantly.
- Don’t allow zoo volunteers to tap on the window to get an animal’s attention. I asked an older lady to stop tapping on the gorilla enclosure window. She replied that she volunteers there and that the gorilla likes it. Somehow I doubt that.
That said, it was a very nice outing. The animals were quite active on a late-spring-like day. We had close encounters with elephants, rhinos, a tiger, a polar bear, gorillas, goats, meerkats, lorikeets and more. Jesse loved it. Good day.
