Haven’t written anything lately, been too busy vacationing. Watching whales, walking the beach, one day fishing, taking photos, eating out and sipping tequila. It’s been good.

Our fishing day was the only crummy weather we’ve had all week. It was cloudy and a little windy, so that made for some rough seas. But we caught three nice bonito, saw a lot of whales and generally had a good day. Photo below is leaving the marina at sunrise, 7am. Cabo sunrises and sunsets are routinely great.

As for food, it’s been a little hit and miss. The food at the resort has really gone downhill. Room service breakfasts used to be a good thing, but not this year. Our meal at Los Tres Gallos was a high point – everything there was A+. It didn’t hurt that I sprung for a bottle of Casa Madero Gran Reserva, maybe my favorite wine in the world. LTG now is recognized by Michelin, and they’re well on their way to getting a star.

Last night’s dinner at El Huerto was a mixed bag. Beautiful setting with the lighted trees, great service. But only two of our five food choices were good (there were three of us, so two different appetizers, two different main course choices and a shared dessert). My choice of an heirloom tomato salad was very meh. Brother Mike’s steak entree was not great – half of it was tough. And our shared dessert, a cornbread-ice cream-spice mixture, wasn’t half as good as a similar one at Tres Gallos.

On the plus side, K’s roasted beef salad and our papardelle main course were superb. So…a mixed bag. But for the prices they’re charging at El Huerto, I would expect more.

The whales have continued their new and surprising behaviors. Cruising right off the beach and doing lots of spyhopping. And so many of them – with just a glance from our patio you can often see 6-7 spouts or splashes. This must be the whale watching capital of the world.

On Tuesday, after our fishing trip, I got the pleasure of watching UK beat Tennessee again. It’s not easy watching college hoops here in Mexico. This time I convinced bribed a waiter at the resort to set up a big screen TV right in front of my table and tune it to an ESPN feed via the Disney channel. The announcers were overdubbed in Spanish, so that was funny – Bilas is much less irritating in Spanish. But it was a great game. I hope to have a similar setup for Saturday’s game against Texas. Assuming we have anyone healthy enough to play.

While we’re away from our homes, heavy weather has struck. Snow again in Louisville, and 2-3 inches of badly-needed rain in Fallbrook. It hasn’t rained there in 9-10 months, so that storm is a big deal.

Net of it all, this year’s Cabo trip is turning out to be a good one. More expensive, still frustrating at times, but a unique little experience that’s still worth the effort.
